There are more than eight gyms in Kanto. You just have to have a minimum of eight badges before you fight the Elite Four.

…Have you played pokemon in the past decade? There are 8 gyms per region, in order to fight the 4 you need the 8 badges from your region. Afterwards (silver and gold) you can fuck off to another region to beat the shit out of those leaders and claim 16 badges for the sake of nostalgia

There are obviously other gyms, even though not all of them give badges. And if you didn’t know that there are other gyms, I guess you played Red or Blue without either Hitmonchan or Hitmonlee. There are only eight badges that you can earn in the games, yes, but in case you didn’t notice, this screencap is from the -anime-, which has several other gyms in it. (Go waterproof Sandshrew.)
…you do know that the anime was made because the game was so popular and and multiple occasions they called a growlithe arcanine? I have no faith in the anime. The games on the otherhand are the stuff of legends.

Silly person. You are clearly not old enough to be commenting. First of all, you should go by Red Version, not Fire Red. Secondly, if you watched the show at all, or the books it was based off of, you would know that there are more, but you only need 8. Really should know more.

Apparently GlaDOS has a gym now or Gary wouldn’t have that companion cube badge (4th badge on the top column).
PS The show had more arcs that included more badges than the games.
No Misty said they could go to another gym beside Cinnabar[SP?] in a throw away line to establish that there are more then the 8 gyms we see on the show where some other one shot trainers that showed other badges.

You guys are forgetting the school in the first season. If you pass their ridiculously hard test, you get a badge that lets you fight the elite 4 without visiting the other gyms.

Are people seriously trying to sound superior by knowing the anime? I’m 22, I watched it when I was 10, even then I thought the changes from the game were annoying. There are 8 badges, electric moves can’t hurt ground types, only retards release pokemon into the wild, and rice balls don’t look anything like donuts.

As everyone else has said, there are other gyms in the show. I vaguely recall people talking to ash about which gyms they were going to go to. Also, I’m pretty sure that only like 3 of those are the badges from the original 8 gyms in the games and that Ash gets. I definitely remember that Gary never got the badge from Giovanni’s gym because he was using Mewtwo, but he didn’t care because he already had over 8 badges.
